Bardonecchia
Bardonecchia is a large town situated in the centre of a picturesque valley, Alta Valle Susa, at an altitude of 1312 m in the Turin province, Northern Italy. The resort is some 50 minutes drive-away from Turin and is crowded in weekends and half-alive during the week. Its history as a ski resort dates back to 1909, when the first Italian Ski Championship was held there. It is still an important and attractive tourist destination and it was the host of Olympic Snowboard events of Turin 2006 and the site of the Olympic Village. The region unites five ex-municipalities: Bardonecchia, Rochemolles, Millaures, Melezet and Les Arnauds, each of which has preserved its own historic and art traditions. There are about 53 religious buildings, some situated even at the height above 3000 meters, the most significant of which are the old Romantic bell tower of the Parish Church of Sant’Ippolito and the Tour d’Amoun in the medieval castle of the feudal lords. There are two museums: one dating back to 19 century, reflecting the life of the town before it became a popular ski resort, and one recently opened illustrating the history of military architecture. The four sundials in Bardonecchia are in Piazza Suspize, via Fiume, via Herbarel and via Pasubio, all of them in the Old Town.

Today, Bardonecchia is a modern ski resort offering a wide range of facilities. There are 100 km of pistes with 21 lifts carrying up to 30 000 people per hour, while artificial snow-making machinery provides perfect conditions for 38 km of the pistes. The slopes of Bardonecchia are divided into two distinct areas: the first includes Colomion, Les Arnauds and Melezet, with pistes running to the centre of the town, and Vallon Cros at the height of 2400 m; the second area is Jafferau at 2800 m, which offers scenic views of the area and off-piste skiing even in the springtime. The Olympic slope provides great adventures for skiers, whereas snowboarders will be most delighted to try out the only European Olympic Half Pipe and the Snow park at Melezet. There are 4 ski schools with 200 ski and snowboard instructors and a number of ski hire centres. The Pin del Colle area gives great opportunities both to the lovers of cross-country skiing and downhill skiers. You can leave your child at the Baby club, where careful assistants take care after kids from 12 months to 6 years. Take a break at the various bars, restaurants and cafés along the slopes and use the time to sunbathe. Other sports include snowshoes trekking, skating, sled dogs, tennis, swimming and fitness. There are other attractive facilities, such as sauna, Turkish bath, massage zones, Jacuzzi, changing-rooms with lockers and showers.

Bardonecchia offers a wide range of accommodations in both large and family-run hotels. Shopping-fans can find major attractions in the variety of shops in the main street Via Medail. Spend enjoying evenings at the number of restaurants, bars and pubs, or divert with a film at the cinema and have wild nights at the discos. A visit to the neighbouring hamlets of Borgovecchio, Melezet, Les Arnauds, Rochemolles and Millaures will revive you and provide you nice moments at the pubs and typical restaurants with local cuisine.
