One of the small resorts in the Fassa Valley, Northern Italy, Vigo di Fassa is a developing village in a sunny and panoramic position at the foot of the Catinaccio Group. It is situated at the altitude of 1382 m and has 1085 inhabitants. Vigo is a recognized winter and summer tourist resort and a starting point for excursions in the Dolomites Group. The village is an outstanding centre of craftsmen, building activity and wood-pastoral activities. The village has a great development and will soon join the neghbouring centre of Pozza di
Fassa.
In the mountains over the village one can discover the beautiful church of Santa Guliana built in the Gothic style with a small bell-tower and a unique wood tile roof, 15 c. frescos, ten original paintings in the Northern side representing the martyrdom of Saint Guliana, and a monumental wooden altar, carved and decorated with a Gothic triptych of 1517. At a hamlet near Vigo called San Giovanni people may visit the Ladin Cultural Institute, the heart of the Fassa Valley culture and a unique monument for study and research of the ancient world. The museum represents the customs of the Ladin people and other typical points of reference of all the valley. In winter it is a perfect departing point for the magnificiennt ski area of Catinaccio, served by a modern network of cable lift and artitificial snow-making facilities.
In the past, Vigo di Fassa was a political, religious and civil centre of the old and independent Comunita Generale di Fassa, a seat of the Captains and the judges of the valley. It is situated on a large natural terrace with a dominant position over the valley and a panoramic view. Vigo both in summer and wintertime is a privileged starting point for a variety of excursions. Through its up-to-date cableway Catinaccio, one can reach the natural terrace of Ciampedie, a place of marvellous view on the surrounding mountains. The place offers a modern planned snow system, which assures a perfect snow cover from November to the end of the season. The resort is a meeting place for many ski team trainings. At Campiede, the terrace in the Dolomites above Vigo di Fassa, people may ski like the great Italian champions on the Pian Peccei-Cigolade, G.Thoeni, Pra Martin and Tomba ski slopes. The piste Tomba at Vigo di Fassa is named after the former Italian champion, who used this place to train for the greatest championships worldwide. It is a ski slope of avarage difficulty long a couple of kilometers opening into a spectacular and unforgettable view of the peaks of Catinaccio. There is a kindergarden at Campiede, a ski school, and a free ski bus service operating between the Fassa Valley resorts and ski pistes, including these of the Tre Valli Ski Cuircuit.
