A hundred miles North of Venice, Cortina d’Ampezzo is defined as the Alpine parlour of Italy and the Queen of the Dolomites – it is the geographic and tourist heart of the Dolomites and of the entire Veneto mountin area – a ski holiday destination for tourists coming from all around the world. Cortina was the home of the first Winter Olympics in Italy and today is still the host of many international ski events, because of its superbly maintained pistes, reliable snow record and bright yet relaxed atmosphere. Crowned by marvellous peaks,
like the Cristallto and the Tofane, Cortina is situated over the basin with the same name at an altitude of 1224 m and may be accessed from any direction by making a cross walk through magnificient mountain passes such as Giau, the Tre Croci and the Falzareg. In the summer the mountains acquire not the gray colours of rocks but red and orange, offering countless possibilities for walking with 56 mountain refuges and 300 km of paths for mountaineers and hikers. There is a ring of peaks that surround the ski resort. The rocks of the Cristallo group limit the north end of Cotina d’Ampezzo. There are also the Tofana Mountains with the three magnificent peaks that look gorgeous in the light of the sun.
Cortina is one of the top Italian ski destinations and is appreciated as much as St Moritz, Lech/Zurs and Courchevel. Cortina d’Ampezzo has the name of one of the most modern and fashionable ski resort in Italy. It boasts with wonderful skiing opportunities for skiers of all levels and it has special facilities for snowboarders. In winter the resort offers 110 km of ski slopes, 58 km of cross-country skiing, which is served by a total of 37 lifts: 23 chair lifts, 5 cable cars and 9 ski lifts. The marked pistes are 140 km across the Cortina valley. The local ski area is suited to meet the needs of all ski levels and the ski runs are wonderfully uncrowded in the week. The resort is one of the most preferred in Italy and this is the place where Italians love to go. The magnificent Dolomiti Super Ski is accessed by a cable car at the Falzarego pass and it is great for expert skiers. The pistes in Cortina d’Ampezzo are great for intermediate skiers and beginners, and the wonderful skiing holiday is guaranteed by the many modern and comfortable ski facilities. Cortina d’Ampezzo is split in three different areas and is accessed by buses and cable cars. The two chief ski areas have 90 and 60 km of slopes. The ski season runs from November to April and snow coverage is guaranteed by artificial snow making machines.
Cortina boasts with about 50 restaurants with tasty local and international cuisine, beautiful small and large hotels with up-to-date accomodation. The attractions of the resort are countless: a swimming pool, an Olymic sized ice-skating rink, bars, an Olympic bobsleigh run, which operates in December and January, the public can try it through the taxi Bob service, where people enjoy speed of over 75 mph with a driver provided, sleigh rides and dog sledging, ice-climbing, skidoos, horse riding, Italian cinemas, several discos open at weekends and curling lessons. Cortina is generally a pretty town with loads of activities for non-skiers, and many Italians who do not ski spend their free time here.
